Plastic Palms

Since the 1950s, Hawaiʻi’s tourism industry has sold an unrealistic version of the islands. It is often assumed that all residents are year-round beachgoers who surf and/or dance hula. While these are popular activities that some locals partake in, many people choose different paths.

To challenge this stereotype, I decided to photograph Hawaiʻi’s goth community in juxtaposition with stereotypical Hawaiʻi backgrounds. Oʻahu’s goth scene has been a part of island nightlife for decades and has provided many people with a solid, familial community. To gain further insight into what this scene is like, I interviewed eleven different people who live gothic/darker lifestyles.
