"There’s been less family shows in Christchurch ever since the 2011 Earthquake hit because people are really just worn out from fighting with insurance companies and earthquake commissions to get their houses repaired. Here in Hawaiʻi, we have a community where everyone helps each other. My brother is a drag queen in Panama and is a big part of the community down there. He was so inspired by our community that he took what we have back there. He wanted them to come together like ours and they did. <image:caption>Sarina Sena Daniels is a trans showgirl born and raised on the Big Island of Hawai’i. At the time of this project, she was based on Oʻahu. “Where I grew up on Big Island was very country and rough. I went to a rough school and theyʻd beat me up and burn me with cigarettes. My grandma was never supportive. I wanted to be a girl, but she didn’t teach me how take care of my hair and make-up. I thought that being transgender was a way out because they wouldn’t beat up a girl. I started hormones when I was 11. I was one of the first on the island. There were no laws protecting me then. Sarina is different than my real identity. She’s the hero I always knew when I was young. Nobody stood up for me when I was getting the shit kicked out of me, so I created Sarina. She’s a protector.”</image:caption>

I came here when I was 18 years old and I came out into this community. These were the first people that I felt comfortable around. They loved me and accepted me for whoever I was and whoever I wanted to be. That holds a very special place in my heart. It used to be very fish and pageant, and now it’s a little more campy, avant-garde, and out there. The newest generation are all the girls who learned from RuPaul’s Drag Race. I hope that whatever I can express in drag and put on stage maybe connects me with someone who feels the same way. In Hawaiʻi, you have a specific level of sisterhood. You respect your elders, but also acknowledge the up and coming. At the end of the day, whether you’re gay, a drag queen, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, weʻre all in the same family. We fundraise for each others pageants and weʻre there for our sisters when they need us. Whether it’s giving them a place to stay for the night or helping them sew a dress. We always remember where we came from and honor the ones who fought for us to get here.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Walking in Two Worlds - Marina Del Rey</image:title>
<image:caption>Marina is known throughout O’ahu’s LGBTQ+ community as the drag mother of the legendary House of Del Rey. They were born and raised on Big Island and currently reside on Oʻahu. “Hawaiʻi’s drag scene has evolved a lot over the years. Some for good, some for not so good. Before, the girls had to work to create something. They created these stages, they created this magic. The fact that we even have a scene thatʻs come out from the shadows is great for the kids. What everyone had to go through to get to this stage is nothing that a lot of these kids are privy to know yet. I don’t see a lot of the girls doing that now. I think [drag has] gotten lazy, but at the same time, it’s also gotten more brave. I think that we are where we should be in drag. I see a lot of creative kids now, but in this generation, there’s no reason that there shouldn’t be more. I think that wherever you go, the oddballs get together and pull together.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Candi Shell is a drag performer originally from Texas and New York. They have called Hawai’i home for several years, regularly performing at Hula’s Waikiki. “Drag is channeling a magic outside energy known as Candi Shell. Itʻs this really special thing that I feel like Iʻve been given access to. There have been times in my life where Candi Shell has almost dictated my life. She brings all the different parts of my life together. I feel like doing drag is probably an ancient impulse. Especially in this patriarchal society that we find ourselves in. Weʻre missing all of this goddess energy, but we have the god energy. Drag queens summon the goddess.”</image:caption>

I proved to everyone that I could do it and now I'm representing those kids that are fucked up and told that they can't make it. It was a weird thing having the crown because I got punished from the outside for having it. People thought it was rigged and they were telling me that I only won because of my father. I didn't wear the crown much not because I wasn't proud of it, but because I didn't wanna receive the weird backlash."</image:caption>

For Augie T being my dad, a lot of people want me to fail. They all think that things are given to me, but honestly, our relationship is only now starting to get really good. He accepted that I'm gay and a queen, but ever since I was a kid, we've never gotten along. We decided to come to a compromise and began to finally bond once we realized that we were really alike. But no matter how hard I work, people always think it's because of him. When I'd apply for jobs, even if I had managerial experience, I always had to work from the very bottom up to show people what I was worth. I always had to work three times harder than everyone to gain only minimum respect."</image:caption>

We do have a postcard look to the place, but we often get treated like a foreign country. Some people still call me a devil worshipper and a witch. It was a challenge being an alternate mother with my 6-year-old daughter, McKenna, at first, but I saw no point in changing my lifestyle just because I’m goth. My daughter loves how eccentric my friends and I are. She thinks it’s weird when people don’t have colored hair or tattoos. I just brought her up in what we think is normal. She's had a few hard times making friends but always says that being different is fun. She’s one of the happiest, brightest children I’ve ever met. I am proud to be her mother. <image:caption>Tracy Lashes poses with tourists in Waikiki, HI. The tourism industry is a major contributor to Hawai'i's economy. According to the Hawai'i Tourism Authority, there are about 220,000 visitors per day in Hawai'i. On O'ahu alone, tourists spend about $19.9 million daily. This has made it difficult for Native Hawaiians to preserve their culture due to new developments constantly being built to meet the high demands of the tourism industry. Many culturally significant sights have been destroyed because of this.</image:caption>

"[There are] a minority of those who value alternative dark arts and culture here in the Aloha State, but we still value the Aloha spirit. As a youth growing up on Kaua'i, other kids teased me and made my life miserable. They didn't know what to make of that weird redhead who liked to wear black and draw in the corner. I felt more welcomed around my goth friends. My goth friends always encouraged me and supported me at my ballet and theater performances. I'm still friends with all my goth high school buddies over 20 years later and picked up even more loyal friends in Honolulu's goth community. To really know yourself, you need to go into that black hole deep inside you and find the singularity of your soul. From that darkness, you can find your way to the true light."</image:caption>

Her 2016 celebration was the biggest of them all, taking place at the Hawaiʻi Events Center and showcasing multiple music acts, aerial burlesque performances, a fashion show, live artwork, and multiple food trucks. In addition to celebrating a birthday she never thought sheʻd see, the event doubled as her retirement party from liquor distributor Youngʻs Market. “I don’t want to say this is going to be my last party, but, with the prognosis that I have—and I’m just being realistic—if I can make it two years, I’m going to be defying odds. I want people to remember this. I want them to remember me like this. It’s been a tough year. I’m like, I’m alive, I’m having a fuckin’ party. As long as I’m alive, I’m having a party,” Wittmier said in an interview with Honolulu Magazine.</image:caption>

My days are either working, preparing food for the baby, or catching up on sleep. I don’t get much time to play with her, but I hope she understands. Even if Hawai’i is so expensive, I could never leave. My parents are over 70-years-old. If I move away, who’s going to take care of them?”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kingʻs Village was first built in 1972 and served as a home to many locally-owned shops. Its unique structure was a breath of fresh air amidst the tall hotel buildings in Waikiki. Over the years, many Waikiki landmarks have been destroyed and replaced by trendier, more tourist-friendly spaces. Kingʻs Village was no exception. The Waikiki landmark, along with the Hale Waikiki and Prince Edwards Apartments, were all recently bought out by Hilton Grand Vacations, a global timeshare company that owns six other properties in Honolulu. A 32-story, 191-unit timeshare tower will replace the 1.05 acre site where local business owners once flourished and apartment residents lived. Some shops were able to relocate, but many decided to either close permanently or retire.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Velina Wong of the Waikiki Beach Boys poses for a portrait. After nearly 46 years of being on Waikiki Beach, this long-time surf school was kicked off by Dive Oʻahu. This caused an outrage amongst Honolulu residents who grew up with the Beach Boys. Despite protests and petitions, the city sided with Dive Oʻahu. Fortunately, the Waikiki Beach Boys were able to set up a shop down the street, but the tension and pain still remains. “We were shut down completely and Dive Oʻahu moved right in. Itʻs very heartbreaking knowing that money can take over culture. A lot of the aunties and uncles who’ve worked there their whole lives don’t have retirement. They didn't know what else to do and had to go on welfare. The City and County needs to realize that these are the people taking care of the tourists.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tyler Okamura Tagupa and Ashley Lata pose for a portrait with their children, Rev, Erin, and Levi, in the small bedroom they all share. They moved to Lataʻs family home in Ewa Beach, Hawaiʻi, earlier this year in March to save money. Their three children share the bunkbed while the couple sleep together on a floor mattress. “Living with 14 people was a culture shock at first. This is Ashleyʻs family home, but I only grew up with my mom as an only child. We live with her mom and dad, two sisters, their kids, and our kids. Her grandma used to be here too. Itʻs a little hard because weʻre a big family of five, but weʻre saving two or three grand every month in savings to put down for our own place. If we stay home, we can find somewhere we like and not get stuck in a contract. Itʻs possible to get ahead in Hawaiʻi, but the cost of living doesnʻt help. Right now, my annual salary is around a low $61-62,000 and I have a family of five,” Tagupa says. An annual income of $96,000 is considered low income in Hawai’i for a family of four. The Tagupa family is planning on moving into their own home later this year.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A self-portrait I took of myself in my familyʻs Wahiawa, HI apartment. My siblings and I were raised on this side and call Wahiawa and Mililani home. Being that six of us live in this small space, I currently sleep and work in the living room. I sometimes wish I had a place of my own, but as a full-time freelance photojournalist with student loans, bills, and financial obligations to my family, itʻs nearly impossible. My parents also yearn to leave our fairly bad neighborhood for somewhere safer, but havenʻt been able to find anything affordable. Luckily, my family is close, so weʻre happy as long as weʻre together. Despite the low-income status of many families in Wahiawa, we’re currently the 5th most expensive place to live in Hawaiʻi. Ironically, weʻre also ranked the 12th worst place to live in Hawaiʻi.</image:caption>

Together, Walter Ritte, Emmett Aluli, Ellen Miles, Karla Villalba, Steve Morse, Kimo Aluli, Gail Kawaipuna Prejean Ian Lind, and George Helm were known as the “Kahoʻolawe Nine”.
